Active Explosion Barrier Prevents Methane Ignition Escalation at Syferfontein Mine
On 13 April 2010, a methane ignition at the Syferfontein underground coal mine in South Africa was successfully contained by an ExploSpot Active Explosion Barrier. Triggered by an electrical flash from a damaged 1000 V cable, the system responded within milliseconds, preventing flame propagation and protecting personnel, equipment, and the operation from a potentially catastrophic explosion.
